Last year, I had the pleasure of presenting a half day seminar on our strategic planning and measurement process You Get What You Measure® at the Land Trust Alliance’s 2013 Rally in New Orleans. This year, I was invited back to present a half day Board Summit seminar, entitled “Increasing Your Land Trust’s Impact through Collaboration,” at the 2014 Rally in Providence, Rhode Island. The Board Member Summit is a special seminar designed for land trust board members. I teamed up again with my wonderful colleague Judy Anderson of Community Consultants in Kinderhook, New York. Judy and I designed a four hour seminar on collaboration, which integrated on the ground land trust examples of collaboration as well as a variety of exercises designed to get land trusts thinking about different levels of collaboration along the collaboration continuum. Land trusts also spent some time assessing their strengths and weaknesses in order to think about the kinds of partners they might consider. Board members had an opportunity to think about the value propositions for engaging with different kinds of partners. The seminar was well received and seemed to get land trusts thinking about different types of partners (not just other land trusts), including hospitals, disability organizations, and transportation organizations.
